Boating by night
I tried a few night shots but I didn't like any of them and then I ran out of time. I took this shot of a boat floating in the ocean. I really like the contrast of textures with the bumpy sand, the misty ocean waves, and the stars in the dark sky. I still have a few ideas that I want to try for another night shot, so I owe another shot.

I like this shot - what were your exposure settings? How is the sand lit?
ReplyDeleteOne note regarding night shots: the rule of 600. If you want your stars to remain as point sources keep your exposure times under 600 divided by the focal length. For example, if you are using a 50mm prime stick below 12 seconds (600/50=12). A zoom set at 20mm would allow for an exposure of up to 30 seconds (600/20=30).
I love shooting at night but I'm still learning by trial and error. Until recently all my shots were with the aperture wide open. This lets in more light but reduces the sharpness. Lately I've been playing with a combination of smaller aperture, different ISO settings and faster lenses.
If you can swing it lower ISO settings are also better as it reduces the amount of noise in the image. And don't forget to remove your circular polarizer as this will cause you to lose a stop or two.
